Topography of the Vinschgau Valley
Art and literature from the Bernhart Collection

The Vinschgau Valley is more than just a geographical landscape: it is a hub of artistic and literary creativity.
In the 1980s and 1990s, Elsa Patscheider and her husband Adolf Bernhart collected art by artists from the Vinschgau Valley, as well as works depicting scenes from the Upper Vinschgau. In 2022, their son Toni Bernhart loaned the collection to the Vintschger Museum. The special exhibition showcases a selection of these works.

The artworks are juxtaposed with literary texts. A connection between art and literature emerges from the Bernhart family’s biography: Elsa Patscheider is the author of the ‘Olt-Graunr Gschichten’, whilst Toni Bernhart is a literary scholar and writer.

Topography (from the Greek tópos, ‘place’, and gráphein, ‘to draw, to describe’) is understood as a multi-layered representation of a cultural space. The exhibition space itself becomes a map: Lake Reschen, the Adige River and the villages of Upper Vinschgau are outlined on the floor. The exhibition modules follow this geography and display works of art and literary texts from the various villages of the Upper Vinschgau. The literary texts can be listened to via audio stations – read by Toni Bernhart.
